8mil Security Window Film

The 8mil security window film reinforces windows and glass against break-ins. It suits medium-sized glass surfaces and is applied from the inside. The film is made to strength class P1A and to the DIN 52337 and EN 12600 safety standards.

The 8mil security film is sold cut to size for DIY installation. It is made for medium-sized glass, and these are the usual places for it:

Features and Benefits

The 8mil film is clear: it transmits 84% of the visible light (VLT 84%), so the window keeps its light and its view. It rejects 20% of the solar energy (TSER 20%) and blocks 99% of UV radiation. The hard coat rates above 2H against scratches, the structure is two-ply, and the service life is 9 years and more.

Installation Insights

The film goes on the inside of the glass, where an intruder cannot get at it. When the glass breaks, the film holds the pieces together and the opening stays closed. It does not stop the glass from breaking — a heavy blow will still crack the pane; what changes is that the cracked pane stays in the frame. For larger windows the thicker 12 Mil window film is the better choice: VLT 82%, TSER 24%.

Installation Tips

Unlike lighter films, the 8mil takes physical effort to lay. Press the film down firmly and work the solution out thoroughly. Use a stiffer squeegee and a weaker solution than you would for a light solar film — a soft blade will not make the thick film follow the glass.

Important Considerations

Install within 5 to 6 days of receiving the film. Leaving it longer affects how it lays.

Store it unrolled, liner facing downwards, on a smooth surface, with a weight on top. Left rolled up, the liner separates from the film and arrow-shaped marks form on it, and those do not come out.

The adhesive sets slowly — depending on the room temperature it can take several weeks to dry fully, and the film reaches its full holding strength only when the adhesive has set.
