12 Mil Security Window Film

The 12 Mil security window film is the thickest film we cut. It makes the glass much harder to break through and holds the pane together when it does break, so the opening stays closed. It is made for large windows in homes, offices and commercial spaces, and goes on the inside of the glass.

What the Film Does When the Glass Is Hit

The 12 mil film makes the glass much harder to break through and protects against entry. The glass itself can still crack under a heavy blow — what the film changes is that the cracked pane holds together and the opening is not breached. That is what costs an intruder time, and time is what usually stops the attempt.

Installation and Maintenance

• Coverage — lay the film with the smallest possible gap at the edges; the edge is where an attack starts.
• Tools and solution — use a stiff squeegee and a weaker mounting solution than for a light film. A soft blade will not make a 12 mil sheet follow the glass.
• Effort — this film takes real physical effort to lay, and on a large pane it is a two-person job.

Additional Considerations

• Unpacking and storage — take the film out of the packaging straight away and store it flat if you are not installing it immediately. Left rolled up, the liner separates and creases form.
• Adhesive setting time — 2 to 3 weeks for the adhesive to set fully, depending on the room temperature. The film reaches its full holding strength only once it has set.

Thinner Options

For smaller panes there are thinner films: the 8 mil security window film at VLT 84% and TSER 20%, and the 4 mil clear safety window film at VLT 86% and TSER 16%, which holds the shards but is not a security film.
